Ralph Lauren photoshop disaster spawns lawsuit threats and fair use Posted: 2 months ago by nateebiinature
The image first appeared on Xeni one month ago, and Boing Boing picked it up to bring more attention to the absurd levels this industry will go to to convince women that . But instead of cowing to Ralph Lauren’s legal team, Boing Boing and others are citing Fair Use and posting the image for the purpose of criticism and comment.

Shocking image on several levels, but the story leaves huge gaping questions; can they confirm it was a photoshop (not that it's likely it isn't)? Was it distributed as part of an ad campaign? Why would the legal team challenge it if it were? Could it be a rogue employee?
I have a huge distrust for the advertising/modeling industry, but articles that say nothing don't help.

Here's an image right off their website... (could possibly be the same model?)
Press attention regarding this practice in the fashion industry perhaps had something to do with the purported lawsuit.
Who knows? Whatever the reasons... marketing distorted images to young women is not, IMO, fashionable.

When you look at a photo in a magazine or an advertisement and ask "was that photoshopped?" The answer is Yes. Every image you see in print has been through photoshop unless it is some photocopy hipster pamphlet in which case it is only likely to have been photoshopped. Especially images of people. Remove moles and zits and dark eye bags and it's all good. Where is the line when it goes wrong?
Do you see fat sloppy guys as models in ads? Nope. So why are guys somehow managing to not become bulimic?
Men in general are looking for the pretty women, and women in general are looking for successful or funny men. Please note the "In Generals". It is unlikely that this pattern will change and you can pass all the laws you want about pictures in ads but as long as this is the way people work you will always have women who obsess over their looks.

For more research, count the ratio of men to women in all ads, mixed-gender ads included. Also consider the number of weight loss/fitness advertisements in "gendered" magazines, as well as cosmetic improvements (from botox to lipstick) in any advertising medium.
When you find the number of men, then categorize those men between realistic and extreme body types. Do the same with women, if there are any that fit in the "realistic" category.
That might go toward answering this question.

Guys, give Natee a break. The description was copied from much of the article -- so what? Take a random sample of posts here and calculate the percentage of pasted descriptions.
While it's true that a longer article gives more opportunity for implied commentary based on which part you choose to quote, or not, short-form articles like this rely on their links for context -- links which were not included in the description.
Was the article interesting? It was for me and some other Plimates so far.
As far as the needling on English errors, we're not building a manual of style here at Plime, last I checked. From my viewpoint, style corrections in comments should be preceded by some admission of anal-retentiveness based on a personal pet-peeve, or sent by personal message.
In this case, the criticism is unnecessary, and ultimately off-topic.

That might go toward answering this question. My point was not that men are unaffected by seeing men shown unrealistically in advertising. It was that body dysmorphia is a much larger issue and that unrealistic images in the media are hardly THE cause of the problem. Like pretty much all mental health issues people need to have a predisposition towards a condition and then be unfortunate enough for their life's path to take them through experiences that let these predispositions grow into real problems.

I appreciate it. :)
For those who have an issue with how and what I post...
Last I checked this is an EDITABLE wiki community.
If the reader determines that a correction or edit needs to be made to a post, and their karma level allows it... they can click the edit button and correct whatever grammar, punctuation and/or content that they feel would benefit the other readers.
Posting inane comments about how I cut and paste or err grammatically is, IMHO, just their way of whining and receiving unearned karma points.
Plime on.

Thank you. I would have to disagree with you on that point. I find it annoying when someone posts an article and then uses the desription area to place their bias on the subject.
I'd much prefer an actual paragraph from the article. Too often I've read what is an opinion piece as a "description" and find no real mention of that statement in the actual article.
Opinions should be placed as comments, no accusations of karma whoring needed in those cases.

No need to call it whining. You're right, it's an editable wiki site, but if I went around editing everything that I thought was poorly done I'd be chased off the site with pitchforks and torches.
DerAlt makes a good point (note how he did that without resorting to calling it whining or karma whoring) in regards to pasting opinion where a description should be. I absolutely agree with him here, and a copy/paste job is better than bias; but I still feel strongly that it can be done better.
And really Nat, your copy/paste of this article is HALF of the article. I'll agree with Drogue too, there are a lot of copy/paste jobs and you are not the only one doing it. You're also not the only one I've talked to about this.
If grammar was an issue, you're absolutely right we could just edit it in. Personally, unless it's super bad I don't even pay attention to grammar; but it does support the assumption that you're just copy and pasting and not paying attention to what you're posting.

DEPoop, I most certainly read the articles I post, so your assumption is absolutely wrong.
On the other hand, your post from yesterday chiding me regarding my posting practices just echoed MBK's sentiment. Neither which, I feel, was really necessary, since they didn't contribute anything to the Plimate discussion about the post.
However, I did find a more concisely written article regarding this same subject posted on the web today, if anyone cares to read it.

I know the comments here are kind of off topic so I wanted to swing the focus back to the ridiculousness of this ad. I'm glad BB didn't back down on their stance to shame the company. Ads like this make me mad!
