I am an opera singer. I am curious what people here think about classical music. Is it an art form full of emotion and complex ideas? Or a cultured version of muzak?

I used to despise opera music, but that's when I was just a kid. I've developed an appreciation for it since, can't quite call myself a fan though.

I love Beethoven. Everything he has written is full of power. He is heads above all the rest, no question. I listen to it often.

I don't like those harpsichord sissy things at all, Handel and Bach, bleh!

As far as opera goes, I like listening to the men, but the women bug me.

Wow. Cap'nBarritone does not like it if you aren't a fan of classical music.

My father and brother are both operatic singers. My dad a baritone envies my brother terribly as he has a lovely tenor voice. Opera becomes incredibly more interesting and thrilling as music once you have had a chance to try and sing it. I highly recommend going to the sing-along Messiah in your town if they have it as it's a great way of getting started in appreciating opera, when you have a chance to feel how sweet it is to sing it.

I have studied some classical forms of music. Right now I am taking a class "Bach and the Baroque". That whole era of music put out some really nice things, some really epic pieces. Some I am not as fond of, obviously. It's a very varied time period, musically speaking. However, there is also a lot of really great stuff that came out of the time period. And it's that music that fathered much of what we listen to today.

I need to get some recordings, but of course, it's difficult sometimes.

I have no idea to this day what them
two Italian ladies were singin' about.
Truth is, I don't want to know. Some
things are best left unsaid. I like
to think they were singin' about
something so beautiful it can't be
expressed in words, and makes your
heart ache because of it

I grew up listening to Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavorrati, and many other operas and classic music. Its really the only thing I listen to now besides rock.

I really enjoy listening to Andrés Segovia perform classical guitar but other than that I have no interest at all even tho my mother was a trained pianist and I grew up listening to all sorts of classical music.

*waits to see who else gets down voted*

Hey, Capt...The down vote is yours to use as you see fit, but down voting someone for sharing a simple opinion is seriously bad form.

Some people might see fit to vote based on your attitude rather than your content, and that can be painful.

Just a friendly heads up.

There's more guidance available on the FAQ, if you have yet to check it out.

I can see how when you are new you feel like you can use your downvote to "disagree" with someone's opinion. But you are right Maven, it just doesn't work best that way at Plime. After being here a few months I routinely upvote people I completely disagree with if they have formulated their opinion in a tolerant, thoughtful and open-minded manner.

Usually you cannot tell who has downvoted you so as form of communication it is very passive/aggressive so we gradually become more careful with using it here. I like to think a downvote should only be used if something shouldn't have been said at all, no vote if you disagree, and upvote if the comment contributes to the discussion in a positive way, even if you disagree. In a perfect world.

I've been an active member of orchestra for the past 8 years. That being said, over the years I've been exposed to a wide and varied array of classical pieces, and none of which can I say I dislike. I very much enjoy classical music and often times listen to it in my car. My favorite operatic piece to date is Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5.
(not the greatest quality:)

Once at the bottom of the page in Hymnal I saw Paganini then I realized it actually said Page Nine. That shows you what I know about composers.

I like Mozart, Shopen, List, but I am not a big fan of some others, for example Wagner.

I like a lot "Van den Budenmayer" too :P

Cool! That was fun to watch.

I like all kinds of classical music. Some better than others, sometimes just depending on my mood.

Probably the one that sticks with me the most, is Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

Here's Summer, to sand animation, no less. Try to get through all of it, if you can. Even if it's background noise. :)

I like opera also, but don't listen to it that often.

EDIT: Crap, it looks like Plime is not set up for wide screen video. :(

I love classical music and some opera, it is something I discovered through metal and now I feel kind of like a child in that I don't really know classical at all. There is so much out there and so much of it is really great..a video I am really liking right now is Dvorak - Slavonic Dance, the whole thing is great but I guarantee you will like this video:
