I run uphill too. Can make it twice as far if I'm looking directly down at the ground. It seems like it tricks my mind into thinking I'm on flat ground. Sounds silly, but it really works. Might wear a bear bell if you're not looking where you're going though! You should strap a can of bear spray on each wrist, like running with light weights. Then you're ready for the double draw.

I do that cycling! Look straight down and your brain doesn't know that you're on an incline. I can make it a LOT further looking down! Nice idea with the bear spray double-draw!

When you run uphill try to run as normally as possible. Getting on the balls of your feet is fine, but don't lean forward or backwards. Look where you would normally look, about 30 yards ahead.

For long distance, an ideal or "correct" arm swing is elbows at 90 degrees, never changing that angle, swinging slightly forward and back (from the shoulder, no "hammering") in opposition to your legs. Loosely held hands. Also make sure your hands stay outside of your body, don't angle them in front of you or hold them in front of your chest. You look like a pussy when you do that too.

People like to talk about how they're unique and s**t like that and that's why they have s**tty form, but the above form will help the vast majority of runners become more efficient.

Alright, so I've been up and running for a few weeks now again after having 'somehow resolved' my knee issues, in training for the Brussels Half Marathon on October 4th.

That in turn is preparation for the London Marathon that I entered.

And yeah I just wanted to bump the thread. I'll post some more interesting stuff in a bit.

I just starting running a few months ago and try to get out there every other day. Listening to music really helps. I always find myself going with hip hop and rap. Any one else listening to that type of music when they run?

I've taken up running again, and seem to be getting shin splints a lot lately. It gets so unbearable that I have to stop running completely.

Is there any way I can get rid of them? I've heard a few suggestions, but they were from people who barely get off the couch, let alone run.

Have you had your stride analyzed? What kind of shoes are you wearing?

Shin splints are usually from how you run, and what you're running on. Avoid concrete, particularly when you're starting up--running will help your bones and cartilage thicken, so you might be able to add concrete eventually, but it's harder on all of you...I avoid concrete totally.

More than 28,000 athletes took part in the Sydney competition this week. They included a bearded man called O Santa Claus.

He ran in the 100-metre sprint in the 80-84 age group.

Barefoot, no less... Impressive... I would have opted for a pair of these:

If you live in the city, as many do, just go slow in how you progress in distance/time per day/week.

The term "shin splints" is really a messy catch all for many different conditions of the lower limbs, but regardless of what you wear, where you run, what your stride looks like, or even what exactly is wrong (stress fractures, strains/sprains, etc.) your body is simply telling you it needs more time to heal the stresses you're applying.

Maybe take it a little easier, temporarily lessen your current running schedule. Icing can help too.

Anyone here run with an iPod nano or such?

I need something to keep my iPod secure while running, and I'm wondering if anyone has advice about the armbands or the shirts with the special inserts?

I've read reports that the armbands always slip down or fit too tight and stuff...

Until now I've been running with a Shuffle, so I didn't have that problem.

I do. And I used to have the shuffle as well.

I use something like this, as I do have the chip to plug in for training as well. It doesn't slip, my friend.

Ah thanks. Yeah I bought the Nike+ thing, just still have to buy a thing to attach it to my laces (I don't use Nikes), and then of course an armband. Looks like they have a nice one for the nano too, but it looks like the sensor won't fit if I use that one... Hmm I shall investigate.

I have a Belkin brand one that fits with the sensor. The Nike sport should, too.

Heh...I have the lace in thing too.

Find a set of stone or marble stairs outside of a large building. Sing Eye of the Tiger loudly. The rest takes care of its self.

I was going to bump this thread anyway, but xiatethebish's post was a just too perfect.

If you're a runner, or want to become a runner, then you MUST read this book:

Born to Run by Christopher McDougall.

It has completely changed the way I run....and it has changed my running goals.

It will answer the questions of why you get shin splints or plantar fasciitis or knee pain or any of that stuff.

And it's not a "How To" book...it's actually a fascinating story that answers many questions about running.

Please...do yourself a favor and read this book!!!
