He wasn't stupid to take it into the house when he didn't know what it was.

It is pretty stupid to throw it back out after you find out it's an anti tank grenade.

The smart thing to do in that case is leave it where it is, and RUN! Whether you call the police while running or after you've stopped is up for debate :)
